Shop Brookyln

Borough President Marty Markowitz, along with other Brooklyn elected officials have launched the borough-wide “Shop Brooklyn” initiative, an awareness campaign highlighting the uniqueness of our neighborhoods and very cool local businesses.

We love Brooklyn! We love our local businesses! The owner of the deli on your corner knows more about your life than your mom, plus how you like your coffee. The bartender down the street has been your mySpace friend since you can remember. And your favorite local restaurant? Well, they always seem to have exactly what your craving.

"Shop Brooklyn" has been created so we remember to embrace our local flaves and faves, and hopefully get to know some new ones! So, go have a beer, have a scrumptious dinner with your sweetie, stop in your local market for fresh fruits and veggies, and, of course, stop by serimony for some locally made goodies for holiday giving... all in our wonderful neighborhood of Brooklyn!

As part of the "shop brooklyn" campaign, serimony is offering some great sales! This friday, aka "Black Friday", stop in for 15% off ALL Brooklyn themed merchandise; tee-shirts for him & her & the little rugrat; cards & totes. We're also offering special deals every weekend through Christmas!

Happy Thanksgiving!

hot off the presses

here at serimony, we've been slowly but surely updating our website, and today finally posted some of our recent custom wedding invitation designs.

Congratulations to Dominique and Todd, who got married last month in Arizona! They were looking for a design that conveyed the colors in the desert, but also had a luxurious feel. We worked together picking out papers and fonts and colors and came up with these gorgeous letterpressed invitations.

new jewelry

i just got these really cool necklaces in... they're actual antique burmese currency hung on sterling and suede.

new block print card design

I just finished carving a new linoleum block for my card line, and I'm really excited about it! A lot of people ask me how I make the designs, how I carve them and what they look like. Here's what the block looks like:

Most of the time I draw something in Illustrator, usually based on a few photos, print it out, and transfer it onto the block with pencil. Then, I set to carving. This process takes quite a while, depending on how complicated the image is, it can take a few days of manual labor (almost always resulting in a cut finger too). I have to admit this particular block is drawn from a photo I took of my husband and our very sweet new puppy, Dottie :)

Once the block is carved, I can start making prints. They always come out a little different every time, which is kind of cool I think. It depends on how much ink I use, how much pressure is put on the paper, and even how wet or dry the ink is as I'm applying it. Its not all down to a science, but its really fun!

a brooklynite to know

A woman came in my store recently and we chatted for about an hour, about art, Brooklyn, community and salons that cater to curly/wavy hair. One of the absolute best things about owning a store in Brooklyn is meeting new cool people! So, my new friend Eleanor wrote this very sweet article about my store on her blog creative times. If you ever want to read smart and thoughtful commentary about brooklyn and artists, politics and what's going on in the community, I highly recommend creative times!

Eleanor also runs her own business as a professional organizer who helps busy Brooklyn moms, artists, and entrepreneurs de-clutter homes and set up systems for organizing clothes, papers, and everything else in their lives. Who doesn't need a little help in their busy Brooklyn life?!

Buy in Brooklyn Snowflake Festival

Buy in Brooklyn is putting on the Snowflake Celebration, a two day (the first two Thursdays in December - the 4th and 11th) local shopping campaign. While this festival is taking place in Park Slope, we at Serimony couldn't be happier.. Buying local is incredibly important and buying in Brooklyn even better!

Of course, Serimony takes this a step further buy selling wares from local designers and artisans.

During Buy in Brooklyn you can find Serimony cards and t-shirts at Lion in the Sun.. Check it out!

face lift

so, as you may have noticed, I changed the layout a bit here. Every now and then, probably having something to do with the change of the seasons, I get really tired of the design and need to do something new. I also updated serimony's website. Some new navigation, new product and take a look at that great shot of my sign, photographed by my very talented friend Amy McNamara, poet and photographer, jeweler and card maker extraordinaire!
